Saxons End Season in E8 Tournament

GENESEO, NY – The No. 7 Alfred University women's basketball team ended its season with a loss to No. 2 SUNY Geneseo, 68-43, in the first round of the Empire 8 Championship Tournament on Saturday.

Jayda L. Felker (Corning, NY/Corning-Painted Post) and Felicia Stewart (Ann Arbor, MI/Pioneer) led the Saxons with 11 points apiece. Stewart added three rebounds to her stat line.

"To feel the emotions we are feeling at this moment is a privilege," Head Coach Mike Moskowitz said. "When you care about basketball, your teammates and this program, you put so much into it physically and emotionally. That leads to disappointment and heartbreak when it all comes to an end. What I'm most proud of is their toughness against a really well-coached program in Geneseo that consistently puts together quality winning teams. We gave it our all and played a great first half. Then the momentum really shifted and they jumped out to a big advantage. Proud of our group as a whole and so thankful for the trust, love and care they gave this program."

The Saxons (13-13) had to play from behind in the early stages of the first quarter. Stewart tallied the first eight points to bring Alfred University within two at 4:15, 10-8. Samantha Fischer (Wappingers Falls, NY/Our Lady of Lourdes) and Felker contributed back-to-back 3-pointers to give the Saxons their first lead of the game. Anastasi made one last-minute bucket, and Alfred University ended the first with a 16-14 advantage.

Geneseo (20-6) went on a 10-5 run at the start of the second quarter to get back in front 24-21 at 5:04. Both teams traded baskets during the next two minutes Jaidyn Chest (Mayfield, NY/Mayfield) and Felker made some huge buckets down the stretch that tied the game at 29-all going into halftime.

However, that was as close as Alfred University would get. The Saxons were outscored by the Knights, 39-14, in the second half which put the game out of reach.

Alfred University shot 15-of-72 (.208) from the field, 6-of-36 (.167) at the three-point line and 7-of-9 (.778) from the charity stripe. Geneseo was 29-of-61 (.475) overall, 5-of-12 (.417) from behind the arc and 5-of-11 (.455) at the charity stripe.

Both teams had 12 second chance points. The Saxons converted their points on 20 offensive rebounds while the Knights registered theirs on 12 boards.

Geneseo had the 38-16 advantage in the paint.
