ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University men's basketball team wrapped up their opening weekend with a 62-38 win over neighboring Alfred State College as part of the Crossbar Alfred Classic.
Following the contest, the Crossbar Alfred Classic All-Tournament was announced. The recipients were as follows:
- G, Tyler Curran (All-Tournament Team; Alfred University)
- G Mykell Lawson (All-Tournament Team; Alfred State College)
- G Josh Martin (All-Tournament Team; Hiram College)
- G Connor Shanahan (All-Tournament Team; Lycoming College)
- G Collin Jones (All-Tournamet Team/Tournament MVP; Hiram College)
Zion Baitey (Morristown, NJ/Morristown) finished the game with a team-high 12 points to go with nine rebounds and a pair of assists.
Amoi Charles (Elmont, NY/H. Frank Carey) registered nine points and five board.
Franlys Valenzuela (Santiago de los Caballeros, Dominican Republic/San Ysidro) recorded 10 points and eight rebounds for AU.
"I'm proud of these guys for their response after last night," Head Coach
Erich Kaempffe said. "It wasn't the full weekend we wanted, but it was good to get our first win of the year today. We'll keep building starting on Monday. A big thank you to Crossbar Athletic for sponsoring our Tip-Off Tournament."
Valenuela set the tone for Alfred University to begin the opening half, scoring four of the team's first six points. Three-point shots by
Gabe Eldaye (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna) and
Robby Hicks (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) gave the Saxons a double-digit advantage with under eight minutes remaining in the first half. Alfred University ended the opening half with a 10-0 run to take a 32-11 lead into halftime. The Saxons relied on baskets from five players to lead by as many as 21 points with under 10 minutes to play in regulation. The defense stepped up to close out the game, allowing just five points across the final five minutes of action to come away with the win.
Alfred University will next travel to face Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts next Saturday as part of the Williams College Tip-Off Tournament.
