ALFRED, NY -- For the second straight week, the Alfred University men's rugby team took down SUNY Geneseo by a large margin, 69-17.
"We played our game today. Unselfish rugby, distributing the ball and using the space outside," Head Coach
Dale Russell said. "We are looking forward to the rematch vs. Brockport in the conference championship next weekend."
Ky Simson (Brooklyn, NY/Erasmus Hall) opened the scoring with the first try early in the first half, followed suit by
Ayomideji Israel-Akinbo (Makhanda, Eastern Cape, South Africa/St. Andrews College) and his rush up the middle of the field.
The rest of the scoring in the first 40 minutes came from
Maximus Coelho (Poughquag, NY/Arlington) and
Eddie Hart IV (Wilton, NY/Saratoga Springs). Coelho had two tries, with Hart having three of his four total tries in the match coming in the first half. It opened up a 29-0 run to start the game for AU.
Simson tacked on another try in the second half, with Hart having another successful try in the second half. Other scorers included junior
Nathan Towne (Ellenville, NY/Ellenville Jr/Sr) and first-year
Tenzin Dawoe (Thimphu, Bhutan/Malden Catholic).
While not getting into the try zone,
Zachary Cuddy (Whitman, MA/South Shore Vocational Technical) continued converting through the uprights. He tacked on seven conversions to help run up the score and surpass last week's showing at Geneseo.
With the win, the Saxons have moved on to the LERC Championship game in just its second season. They'll look to avenge their lone loss of the season at SUNY Brockport with a time and date to be determined.
