Football Downed by Brockport, 51-0

BROCKPORT, NY – The Alfred University football team fell in Empire 8 action to SUNY Brockport on Saturday afternoon, 51-0.

The Saxons (3-5, 1-4 Empire 8) gave up only three points in the first quarter to the Golden Eagles (6-2, 4-1 Empire 8) but a 20-point second quarter and 21-point third put the win out of reach. Brockport added another seven points in the fourth.

Brockport began the game from their own 25-yardline after an Owen Bishop (Penn Yan, NY/Penn Yan Academy) kick went through the endzone. After 10 plays and 73 yards, Brockport looked for the first touchdown of the game as quarterback Ben Gocella made a short pass to the right with the line of scrimmage set at the Alfred 3-yardline. The pass was caught by Isaiah Simmons who had it knocked out of his hands by Luke Atlas (Wilson, NY/Wilson). Simmons scrambled and recovered the loose ball for a loss of seven on the play and forced the field goal attempt which was successful.

After three total punts (two from the Saxons), Brockport failed a fourth-and-five conversion as Martin Flanders Jr (Schuylerville, NY/Schuylerville) sacked Gocella for a loss of four. The quarter ended during the Saxons' next possession.

Brockport opened the second quarter with a stop and a Saxon punt, bringing their next possession down to the Alfred 18-yardline and settled for their second field goal of the game. Simmons scored the first touchdown of the game with an 11-yard rush and the Golden Eagles never looked back.

Simmons rushed for a net of 236 yards total with three touchdowns including a 99-yard score in the third.

Atlas and Flanders Jr led the defense as Atlas totaled eight tackles with six solo stops and his forced fumble, seven-yard tackle for a loss. Flanders Jr totaled two tackles, both of which were solo sacks for a loss of 11 yards in total.

Colin McGovern (New City, NY/Clarkstown North) punted eight times for 347 yards, averaging 43.4 yards per punt, a long of 63 yards and three punts inside of the 20-yardline.

The Saxons will next travel across the street to fight for the first ever Stoplight Trophy as Alfred University and Alfred State College hosts, the fifth event of the Alfred Cup on Saturday, November 8 at 1:00pm.
