HOUGHTON, NY – The Alfred University women's tennis team earned a 6-1 victory at Houghton University on Wednesday.
In addition, the Saxons clinched a spot in the Empire 8 Championship Tournament.
"This was a lot closer than the scores showed," Head Coach
Jake Fisler said. "We knew it would be a tough away match and it was a battle. I was extremely pleased with
Alyssa Seegert's dominant performance at No. 3 singles and
Alexis Gits for coming back from 2-5 in the third set and winning the match 7-5. This was an awesome way to wrap up conference play and they did a great job of supporting one another."
After AU lost in the first doubles match,
Alyssa Seegert (Oroville, CA/Las Plumas) and
Becca Epping (Mitchell, IN/Bedford North Lawrence) earned a decisive 6-2 victory at No. 2. The Saxons secured the doubles point after
Alexis Gits (Irondequoit, NY/Irondequoit) and
Allison Windisch (Pittsford, NY/Sutherland) registered a win at No. 3 by a score of 6-4.
In singles, Houghton University (4-7, 3-4 Empire 8) won the first match at No. 2. AU responded with the next two victories in straight sets. Seegert registered 6-1, 6-2 at No. 3, followed by
Alina Zabihailo (Kyiv, Ukraine/Education Complex #143), who was victorious at No. 1, defeating her opponent 6-4, 6-3.
Windisch was pushed to a tie breaker at No. 5, but ultimately won with scores of 6-2, 7-6 (7-2). At No. 6, Gits lost the first set 6-4 before winning the second, 6-0. Down 2-5 in the third, she scored five points to clinch the comeback victory, 7-5. Epping was also victorious in three sets while playing at No. 4. She won the first set 7-5 and lost the second, 6-4. Epping scored 10-7 in the third to clinch the match win for AU.
The Saxons wrap up the regular season with two non-conference matches, beginning with SUNY Cortland at home on Friday at 3:00 PM.
