ALFRED, NY -- The Alfred University women's tennis team took on SUNY Cortland in a rescheduled home match, edging out the 4-3 win.
"This was as even of a match as it could be. Both teams came to play and it was an absolute battle," Head Coach
Jake Fisler said. "There were many impressive individual victories in third set tiebreakers, but this was a team victory. This group finished out the season undefeated at home, and I couldn't be more proud with how much they have grown."
It all came down to the wire in the fifth single, where
Allison Windisch (Pittsford, NY/Sutherland) won 7-5, 7-6 and took home the tiebreak 7-1 to get the win for AU.
Alexis Gits (Irondequoit, NY/Irondequoit) also came through in position six, with a 6-4, 6-1 win.
Becca Epping (Mitchell, IN/Bedford North Lawrence) continued to show the importance of the Saxons' depth, winning in the fourth single in a comeback, 4-6, 6-1, 10-3. She also snagged the lone doubles win of the afternoon alongside
Anastasia Shaw (Orange County, NY/Washingtonville), 6-3.
Elizabeth Madsen (Portland, OR/Grant) wrapped up the Saxons scoring with a win in her singles match in position two, also coming down to the wire. She took the first set 7-6 with a tiebreak win of 7-5, while dropping set two 6-4. It took an 18-point thriller to win the third and final set 10-8.
AU moves to 9-4 overall, staying perfect at home with an Empire 8 record of 5-3. They'll have one more regular season test on the road against SUNY Oneonta on Saturday, October 11 at 1:00 p.m.
