ONEONTA, NY – The Alfred University women's tennis team ended the regular season with a 5-2 victory at SUNY Oneonta (4-7, 1-4 SUNYAC) on Saturday.
 
"The team came out to compete, and the energy was high," Head Coach Jake Fisler said. "Huge shout to Alina Zabihailo and Elizabeth Madsen for a dominant performance in doubles. Anastasia Shaw and Alexis Gits have been so consistent all year and brought that same energy today, winning their respective singles matches. Next up, E8 playoffs."
 
Becca Epping (Mitchell, IN/Bedford North Lawrence) and Alyssa Seegert (Oroville, CA/Las Plumas) got things started with a 6-2 win at No. 2 doubles. Alina Zabihailo (Kyiv, Ukraine/Educational Complex #143) and Elizabeth Madsen (Portland, OR/Grant) defeated their opponent by the same score at No. 1. Alexis Gits (Irondequoit, NY/Irondequoit) and Allison Windisch (Pittsford, NY/Sutherland) secured the doubles sweep with a 6-4 win at No. 3.
 
In singles, Gits won the first match at No. 5 with scores of 6-0, 6-0. Zabihailo joined Gits with another straight-set victory of 7-5, 6-2, at No. 1. Windisch played her opponent in a first-set tiebreaker at No. 4. Eventually, she came out victorious with a win of 7-6 (7-5), 6-3. Anastasia Shaw (Orange County, NY/Washingtonville) earned her fourth career singles victory in a three-set battle at No. 6. She lost the first set, 6-4, before rallying with wins in the final two, 6-2, 6-2.
 
The Saxons (10-4, 5-3 Empire 8) will be the No. 5 seed in the Empire 8 Championship Tournament. AU will travel up to Rochester to take on No. 4 St. John Fisher University in the first round on Tuesday, Oct. 14, at 6:00 PM.
