AUVB Downs Keuka 3-0 on the Road

KEUKA PARK, NY – The Alfred University women's volleyball team ended the weekend with another 3-0 Empire 8 win at Keuka College on Saturday.

The Saxons (8-11, 2-1 Empire 8) defeated the Wolves (1-14, 0-1 Empire 8) by scores of 25-22, 25-13, 25-17.

Taylor Malone (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) led with 17.0 points on 14 kills, two service aces, and a season-high matching two block assists. Julia Abbott (Binghamton, NY/Binghamton) hit a .381 percentage to finish with her second career double-figure scoring performance of a season-high 10.0 points on a season-high 10 kills. Delaney Sims (Bogart, GA/George Walton Academy) registered a game-high 28 assists and 12 digs. She also scored 6.0 points on three kills, two service aces, and two block assists. Madalynn McGowan (Corona, CA/Norco) was second behind Sims with 11 digs while notching a career-high six assists and two service aces.

AUVB was down 7-1 at the beginning of the first set. Sims notched a kill and service ace while Malone added another kill to get the team close within four. Two errors by the Saxons and a home team kill extended the advantage to seven for Keuka College. The Wolves had five errors of their own that resulted in AUVB trailing by one, 12-11. Kills from Abbott and Carleigh Santavy (Commerce, MI/Walled Lake Northern) ignited a 6-2 run that gave the Saxons their first lead of the match, 17-15. However, AUVB struggled with five errors of its own that gave Keuka College back the lead, 22-21. But the Saxons came back with four unanswered points to close out with the first set victory.

Transitioning to the second set, the early stages featured three ties and three lead changes. The Wolves led 6-4 before Malone recorded a kill that ignited another Saxons run of 6-1 that put the visitors in the lead for good.

AUVB started the third set with the advantage and maintained it to secure its second E8 victory of the season. The Saxons hit .324 as a team compared to the Wolves' .135. Both teams had 37 total attacks apiece, but AUVB had the 14-12 edge in kills during the set. Seven of the teams' points came on errors by Keuka College.

"The team played a great match against Keuka on their home court," Graduate Assistant Maddison Minyo said. "Our serving was tough and our offense was consistent and strong, leading us to a great win."

The Saxons are at Terry S. Galanis Arena for the next three matches, beginning with a non-conference contest against the University of Rochester on Wednesday at 7:00 PM.
