ALFRED, NY - Consistent scoring in both halves from the Alfred University women's soccer team led to an 11-0 win over SUNY Poly on Wednesday night. The victory for the Saxons clinched the No. 8 seed in the Empire 8 Championship Tournament, marking the sixth consecutive season in which AU has reached the conference tournament.
The Saxons (7-9-2, 3-6-2 Empire 8) finished the game with season-high marks in shots (45) and shots on goal (24). In total, nine different players from Alfred University scored as part of the win.
"I thought the team came out and worked hard tonight knowing we needed the win," Head Coach
Craig Yanni said. "I am proud of how the team worked through a lot of adversity this year to get us into the conference tournament."
The Saxons set the tone in the early stages of the first half, as a pass from
Evony Diaz (Santa Barbara, CA/San Marcos) to
Julia Flaitz (Arkport, NY/Arkport Central) put Alfred University on the scoreboard in the 5th minute. Just two minutes later,
Isabelle Dennis (Livonia, NY/Livonia) found
Madison Rudenauer (Hornell, NY/Hornell) for her first collegiate goal. Flaitz got herself into the scoring column following an assist from
Lina Young (North Collins, NY/North Collins). In the 13th minute, Young was credited with an assist to
Abby Scanlan (Albion, NY/Charles D'Amico) to extend the lead. Dennis continued her successful evening, dishing an assist to
Emily Klotz (Elmira, NY/Elmira). An assist from
Anna Henner (Williamson, NY/Williamsville Senior) to Young had AU leading 6-0 going into halftime.
The second half held a similar tune for the Saxons, as Dennis clinched her third assist to
Ava Thayer (Nunda, NY/Keshequa) in the 47th minute. Less than three minutes later, Thayer found the back of the net on an assist from Scanlan. In the 58th minute, Dennis registered her fourth assist of the game on a pass to
Sidney Khuns (Spencerport, NY/Spencerport). With her fourth assist of the game, Dennis marked a single-game record dating back to the 2007 season. The Saxons relied on goals from
Reyna Hermoza (Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada/Lewiston-Porter) and
Lola Prevost (Pelham, Ontario, Canada/Notre Dame) in the closing moments to further the advantage and come away with the win.
Alfred University will next appear in the Empire 8 Championship Tournament, with details to be released.
