GENESEO, NY -- The Alfred University men's rugby team wrapped up an impressive regular season with a 61-10 win over SUNY Geneseo.
Four Saxons found their way to the try zone, led by
Ayomideji Israel-Akinbo (Makhanda, Eastern Cape, South Africa/St. Andrews College) with five tries.
Zachary Cuddy (Whitman, MA/South Shore Vocational Technical) was the other Saxons with multiple tries with two. Cuddy also continued his streak of kicking through the uprights with eight conversions.
The last two AU scorers were
Phillip Peterson III (Auburn, NY/Auburn) and
Chevon Adriaans (Paramaribo, Suriname/SGS), each with one try to their name. After dropping just one match all season on the road against SUNY Brockport, Alfred University has won five straight, outscoring their opponents 313-60 in that time frame. In three of those five matches, AU eclipsed 60 or more points.
"Today's win felt amazing," Israel-Akinbo said. "Ending the regular season with a win bringing the playoff game home made it all better. Proud of the team and ready for the next one."
"They were a tough team, but we were the team that showed we wanted it more," Cuddy said. "Everyone showed up and gave 100% effort leading to the win."
Lead by Head Coach
Dale Russell, Alfred finishes the year 6-1 overall and clinched the second seed in the UNYCRC Conference Championships. They will host this same Geneseo squad at home on November 1 with a time to be determined.
