ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University women's soccer team opened their week with a 1-0 loss to St. John Fisher University on Wednesday evening from Yunevich Stadium.

Prior to the start of the game, Alfred University Athletics took time to recognize Breast Cancer Awareness Month, in conjunction with the Wellness Center and Institute for Cultural Unity.

Molly Stainbrook (Clarence, NY/Clarence) led the Saxons with a pair of shots on goal. Julia Flaitz (Arkport, NY/Arkport Central) and Zoey Wolf (Holley, NY/Holley) were each credited with a shot on goal. Kiani Barnard-Pratt (Westford, MA/Westford Academy) picked up four saves in goal for AU.

"I'm proud of how hard the team battled tonight and the energy we brought," Head Coach Craig Yanni said. "It was an unfortunate result and we have to continue to work on how we can create more chances on the offensive end."

The Saxons defense was tested early in the opening half, successfully defending four shots and two corner kicks. The first scoring opportunity came for AU came on a cross from Lina Young (North Collins, NY/North Collins) to Flaitz that nearly connected. St. John Fisher took the initial lead following a goal in the 17th minute. AU recorded shots late in the first half but went into the break with a 1-0 deficit. Alfred University was more aggressive in the offensive third to begin the second half, earning three corner kick opportunities inside the first 10 minutes of action. Stainbrook was the lone Saxon to record a shot on goal in the final half of regulation, but the Cardinals were able to maintain their lead and come away with the win.

Alfred University will next host Elmira College on Saturday at 7:00 PM as part of Homecoming Weekend.
