GENESEO, NY – The Alfred University women's basketball team fell to SUNY Geneseo by a score of 75-50 on Friday.
Jaidyn Chest (Mayfield, NY/Mayfield) and
Jessica Beehler (Dunkirk, NY/Dunkirk) both led the Saxons (10-6, 4-3 Empire 8) with 11 points apiece. Chest also registered four assists and a season-high five steals.
"We struggled out of the gate to do what we wanted to do on both ends and started with a quick deficit," Head Coach
Mike Moskowitz said. "We did a lot better in most stretches. It came down to some timely lapses that prevented us from cutting it to single digits when we would make our runs. Looking forward to another opportunity to get better together tomorrow."
Alfred University struggled with shooting in the first quarter as it was held to only 3-of-16 (.188) from the field, while SUNY Geneseo (12-4, 7-0 Empire 8) shot 9-of-14 (.643) to take a 19-6 advantage. Chest and Beehler were the two Saxons to score in the first.
The Knights extended their lead by 19 points with three unanswered baskets at the start of the second. Chest and Beehler pitched in once again, combining for the Saxons' next 10 points.
Ava Anastasi (Sanborn, NY/Starpoint) and
Samantha Fischer (Wappingers Falls, NY/Our Lady of Lourdes) each drained a three-point shot to trim SUNY Geneseo's margin to 13. The Knights responded with back-to-back layups to take a 39-22 lead at halftime.
Alfred University came out of the locker room in the second half with back-to-back baskets by
Jayda L. Felker (Corning, NY/Corning-Painted Post) and Beehler.
Natalee Collins' (Waterville, NY/Waterville) two free throws and layup brought the Saxons within 12, 41-29. Three Saxons each contributed baskets to keep the score within that margin for the majority of the third. However, SUNY Geneseo pulled away and outscored Alfred University, 20-11, in the fourth quarter to go on to victory.
The Saxons went 21-of-66 (.318) from the field, while the Knights were 28-of-54 (.519). SUNY Geneseo was 16-of-20 (.800) from the free-throw line and had 50 points in the paint. Meanwhile, Alfred University was 2-of-6 (.333) at the charity stripe and had 26 points in the paint. The Saxons also registered 11 points on 11 offensive rebounds.
Alfred University looks to bounce back at SUNY Brockport on Saturday, January 25. Tipoff is set for 2:00 pm.
