UTICA, N.Y. – The Alfred University women's basketball team picked up another Empire 8 win over SUNY Poly by a score of 56-31 on Friday.
Jayda L. Felker (Corning, N.Y./Corning-Painted Post) and
Grace Rittenhouse (Dansville, N.Y./Dansville) led with 11 points apiece. Felker grabbed a career-high nine rebounds, a feat matched by
Jaidyn Chest (Mayfield, N.Y./Mayfield) who also recorded the same number of boards.
Libby Benner (Nunda, N.Y./Keshequa) registered the first double-figure performance of her career with a season-high 10 points while adding six rebounds to her stat line.
"We did a really nice job defensively in the first half and that kind of set the tone for the game," head coach Mike Moskowitz said, "We've got to clean some stuff up on both ends to be ready for a tough Utica team tomorrow."
Both teams went cold after scoring their first buckets in the early stages of the first quarter. At the 2:33 mark, Felker and Jessica Beehler (Dunkirk, N.Y./Dunkirk) combined for the Saxons' (9-5, 3-2 Empire 8) next nine points. Benner capped off the first quarter with a three to make it a 15-8 game in favor of the visiting team.
Alfred University's defense came into play in the second quarter. The Saxons held the Wildcats to just one field goal while scoring 13 points on the other end, 28-10. As a result, Alfred University would hang on to the advantage for the rest of the game.
The Saxons shot 21-of-69 (.304) from the field and 10-of-39 (.256) from the three-point line. The Wildcats were 15-of-60 (.250) overall and 1-of-20 (.050) from behind the arc.
Alfred University had a 28-20 advantage in the paint. The Saxons also had 13 points on 15 offensive rebounds and 11 off 24 Wildcat turnovers.
