Saxons Suffer Defeat to Knights

ALFRED, NY — The Alfred University men's swimming & diving hung with the SUNY Geneseo Knights, but fell short in a 178-120 loss.

Five wins make up for the overall team loss. Three of the first-place finishes came from first-year swimmer Carlos Gonzalez (Baja California, Mexico/Unifront).

"We were able to compete with one of the higher ranked teams in Division III," head coach Brian Striker '00 said. "We had some standout swims and were able to piece together some great things on the diving board."

Gonzalez took care of business in both the 100 and 200 breaststroke, with times of 59.16 and 2:09.94 respectively. He also took the victory in the 200-IM at 2:00.50.

Sean Killian (Kenmore, NY/St. Joseph's Collegiate Institution) won his 1000-yard freestyle by over 10 seconds, in a time of 10:18.99. He also wrapped up second in the 500-free, just falling short of first by under a second at 4:59.87.

The fifth winner of the evening came from William LaMastus (Maumee, OH/Anthony Wayne) in the 100yard backstroke, with a 53.94. LaMastus also had three second-place finishes in the 200-back (2:02.07), 100-fly (53.72), and in the 200-medley relay (1:37.70) alongside Gonzalez, Emiliano Terrazas (La Paz, Bolivia/Saint Andrew's), and Emmanuel Drappatz (Pittsburgh, PA/Fox Chapel Area).

Drappatz added a third-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle with a 22.27, while Terrazas had two other runner-up finishes in the 200-fly (2:06.27) and in the 200-IM (2:04.79). Other podium finishers in the pool came from Alexander Villegas (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) in the 200-yard freestyle with a 1:55.10, and Paul Tuttle (Irondequoit, NY/Irondequoit) in the 200-back clocking in at 2:10.63.

In the diving well, Jaxson McQuaid (Norwalk, CT/Norwalk) had some tough competition. But, he held his own and managed to edge ahead for two second-place finishes. His score in the 1-meter dive was 236.60, while his 3-meter dive score came in at 238.15.

One final meet awaits the Saxons before the Empire 8 Championships in February against Hartwick College. The dual meet will also see the home side celebrate their five departing seniors on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
