Saxons Tame Lions in 8-0 Shutout Victory

ALFRED, NY – Seven different members of the Alfred University women's soccer team found the back of the net as part of an 8-0 win over Penn State Altoona on Saturday night from Yunevich Stadium.

The eight goals for the Saxons (3-0, 0-0 Empire 8) mark the most in a single game for the program dating back to the 2019 season.

Lina Young (North Collins, NY/North Collins) led Alfred University with a pair of goals. Sidney Khuns (Spencerport, NY/Spencerport) totaled two points from one goal and one assist. Isabelle Dennis (Livonia, NY/Livonia) scored once from a team-high four shots for AU.

"It's nice to get another win at home," Head Coach Craig Yanni said. "It was a good game to get everyone a chance to play. We are looking forward to getting back to work on Monday."

The Saxons wasted no time in the opening half on the offensive end, forcing back-to-back corner kick opportunities, as Amber Bates (Jamesville, NY/Jamesville-DeWitt) set up Nyah Solly (Colden, NY/Springville-Griffith Institute) for a header in the third minute of action for the initial lead. The Lions forced their lone shot on goal in the first half during the 12th minute, but the Saxons retaliated with Young's first goal of the evening. Under two minutes later, Alfred University extended their lead thanks to a goal from Dennis that was set up by Khuns.

The Saxons continued to receive support on the offensive end from Khuns, who recorded her first goal of the fall season during the 30th minute of play. Abby Scanlan (Albion, NY/Charles D'Amico) added momentum for Alfred University off the bench, scoring and tallying an assist for Julia Flaitz (Arkport, NY/Arkport Central) in the span of six minutes. The defense limited the Lions without a single attempted shot for over 30 minutes before going into halftime with an impressive 6-0 lead.

The second half held a similar tune for Alfred University, as Young recorded her second goal of the game in the opening stages. Penn State Altoona managed to rip off shots early, with Lauren Mott (Cortland, NY/Cortland) picking up a save in the 56th minute of action. The Saxons found an opening thanks to Darby Lukowski (Seneca Falls, NY/Mynderse Academy), who recorded her first collegiate goal in the 77th minute. The Lions attempted two more shots across the final 10 minutes of play, but the defense for Alfred University held on to record their third consecutive shutout victory to open the new season.

Alfred University will next travel across the street to face Alfred State College on Wednesday at 7:00 PM.
