ALFRED, NY - A pair of goals in the second half for the Alfred University women's soccer team led to a 2-0 win over Alfred State College on Wednesday night from Pioneer Stadium.
The matchup between Alfred University and Alfred State College marked the first in program history, with the Saxons totaling 11 corner kicks and limiting the Pioneers to just one shot on goal.
"Tonight was a hard-fought win," Head Coach
Craig Yanni said. "It's nice to come away with the win. I thought the team did a good job coming out of halftime and executing what was asked of them."
Amber Bates (Jamesville, NY/Jamesville-DeWitt) cashed in with her fifth assist of the season and has now recorded at least one assist in AU's first four contests.
Nyah Solly (Colden, NY/Springville-Griffith Institute) was dominant on both ends of the field, leading the defense for the Saxons while being credited with a goal.
The Saxons found opportunities early in the opening half, forcing four corner kick opportunities across the first 10 minutes of action. The first shot on goal for Alfred University belonged to
Lina Young (North Collins, NY/North Collins) during the 16th minute of play. The defense for the Saxons held the Pioneers without a shot attempt across the entire first half, as both sides entered halftime with a scoreless draw.
The second half for Alfred University held a similar tune on the offensive end, as a free kick opportunity allowed the Saxons to find the back of the net. Later in the half, a corner kick for the Saxons resulted in Solly recording her third goal of the fall campaign. The defense once again put together a dominant half, holding Alfred State to one shot on goal before holding on for the shutout win. The shutout for the Saxons marked their fourth straight to begin the season, now outscoring their opponents by a 18-0 margin.
Alfred University will next open Empire 8 conference play under the lights against Keuka College in a home game on Saturday at 7:00 PM.
