Saxons Match Best Start Since 1998 Following E8 Win Over Keuka

ALFRED, NY - The Alfred University women's soccer team carried their winning streak into Empire 8 conference competition following a 3-1 win over Keuka College on Saturday night from Yunevich Stadium.

The Saxons (5-0, 1-0 Empire 8) have now opened their season with a perfect record across five contests for the first time since the 1998 season. To this point, Alfred University has outscored their opponents by a 21-1 margin.

Alfred University was led by the efforts of Kayla Silverstein (North Chili, NY/Churchville-Chili), who scored once across a team-high three shots. Amber Bates (Jamesville, NY/Jamesville-DeWitt) recorded her sixth assist of the season and has now tallied at least one assist in each of AU's first five games. Nyah Solly (Colden, NY/Springville-Griffith Institute) and Isabelle Dennis (Livonoa, NY/Livonia) each contributed with one goal for the Saxons.

"It's great to come away with a win to begin Empire 8 competition," Head Coach Craig Yanni said. "We're looking forward to a competitive matchup against Ithaca next week."

The offense for AU set the tone early in the opening half, as Lina Young (North Collins, NY/North Collins) was the first to record a shot on goal in just the second minute of action. Keuka put three shots across in the early stages, but an assist from Megan Rinker (Le Roy, NY/Le Roy) to Silverstein put Alfred University on the scoreboard. Less than 10 minutes later, a corner kick opportunity from Bates to Solly extended the lead for the Saxons in the 29th minute. The Wolves were limited to just one additional shot attempt across the final 27 minutes before AU carried a 2-0 lead into the break.

Corner kicks were a specialty for the Saxons to begin the second half, as AU forced four opportunities inside the first seven minutes. An opportunity from Sidney Khuns (Spencerport, NY/Spencer) eventually found its way to Dennis, who put the ball into the back of the net. The Wolves spoiled the shutout opportunity for the Saxons in the 83rd minute, but Alfred University ultimately came away with the win thanks to complete efforts on both ends of the field.

Alfred University will next travel to Ithaca College on Tuesday for a non-conference matchup at 4:00 PM.
