ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University women's soccer team kicked off their week with a 1-0 shutout win over Geneva College (PA) on Tuesday from Yunevich Stadium.
With the win, Head Coach
Craig Yanni became the second coach in program history to reach 50 career coaching wins, joining the likes of
Pat Codispoti.
"I thought today was a physical and competitive game," Yanni said. "The team came out in the second half and executed what we asked them to do. It is good to start the season with two wins at home."
Evony Diaz (Santa Barbara, CA/San Marcos) recorded the game-winning goal for the Saxons, marking her first of the fall season.
Amber Bates (Jamesville, NY/Jamesville-DeWitt) was credited with an assist.
Kiani Barnard-Pratt (Westford, MA/Westford Academy) recorded her 15th career shutout, totaling three saves for the Saxons.
The Saxons offense put together their first shot on goal thanks to
Lina Young (North Collins, NY/North Collins) in the ninth minute of action. The defense was efficient against corner kick opportunities, rejecting three from Geneva in the opening half. The Saxons held the Golden Tornadoes without a shot on goal across the final 25 minutes of the first half before going into the break with a scoreless draw.
The Saxons forced back-to-back corner kick opportunities for themselves early in the second half, with Bates setting up Diaz for the score in the second attempt. The Golden Tornadoes were limited to one shot on goal across the entire the second half, as the defense for the Saxons held on for the win.
Alfred University will next remain at home for a non-conference matchup against Penn State Altoona on Saturday at 6:00 PM.
