ALFRED, NY - An early goal for Houghton University led to a 1-0 win over the Alfred University women's soccer team on Saturday night from Yunevich Stadium.
The Saxons (5-1-2, 1-1-1 Empire 8) outshot the Highlanders (5-3-1, 2-0 Empire 8) by a 17-6 margin, while recording seven corner kick opportunities.
"There was a lot to learn from tonight," Head Coach
Craig Yanni said. "We will learn look to improve during practice as we prepare to travel to St. John Fisher."
The Highlanders managed to put only two shots on goal across 90 minutes of action, with each of those shots came within the early stages of the opening half. A deflected shot for Houghton found its way to the back of the net in the 11th minute, as Alfred University was forced to play from behind. The Saxons tried to find rhythm early in the game, earning three corner kicks across the first 25 minutes.
Abby Scanlan (Albion, NY/Charles D'Amico) and
Nyah Solly (Colden, NY/Springville-Griffith Institute) each recorded a shot on goal in the closing minutes, but AU trailed going into the second half. A shot on goal for
Evony Diaz (Santa Barbara, CA/San Marcos) was one of few opportunities for the Saxons to equalize in the second half of play, but Houghton managed to run out the clock before coming away with the win.
Alfred University will next travel to St. John Fisher University on Wednesday at 7:00 PM.
