ROCHESTER, NY - An early goal for the Alfred University women's soccer team led to a 1-1 draw against Nazareth University on Tuesday from Golden Flyer Stadium.
Alfred University was led by
Evony Diaz (Santa Barbara, CA/San Marcos), who tallied her second goal of the fall season.
Kiani Barnard-Pratt (Westford, MA/Westford Academy) totaled six saves for AU.
"It was good to get a result on the road against a really good Nazareth team," Head Coach
Craig Yanni said. "The team worked hard for 90 minutes. We are looking forward to getting back to work tomorrow to prepare for this weekend."
The Saxons (5-0-2, 1-0-1 Empire 8) took advantage early in the opening pass, as Diaz intercepted a pass from Nazareth (3-2-2, 0-0-2 Empire 8) in the offensive third and found the back of the net for the initial lead in the seventh minute of play. The defense for AU played well to begin the game, limiting the Golden Flyers to just one shot on goal across the first 15 minutes of action. Nazareth eventually retaliated with their first goal of the game in the 32nd minute before each side went into halftime with a 1-1 draw.
Kayla Silverstein (North Chili, NY/Churchville-Chili),
Molly Stainbrook (Clarence, NY/Clarence) and
Alyssa Smith (Pearl River, NY/Pearl River) were among those to attempt shots early in the second half for the Saxons. The Golden Flyers had a brief opening for the go-ahead lead in the 78th minute, but a physical play by Barnard-Pratt neutralized the damage. The defense stood tall for the Saxons in the 85th minute, rejecting a corner kick opportunity for Nazareth. Neither side managed to reach the back of the net before the end of regulation sent both sides home with a tie.
Alfred University will next return home to host Houghton University as part of Homecoming Weekend on Saturday night at 7:00 PM.
