Softball Splits Non-Conference Twin Bill with Ithaca

ITHACA, NY – The Alfred University softball team played a non-conference doubleheader at Ithaca College, resulting in a split on Tuesday evening.

The Saxons (11-9, 2-2 Empire 8) dropped the first game in six innings, 8-0 before coming back to the win the nightcap, 11-0 over the Bombers (16-6, 2-0 Liberty League) in six innings.

"We always love playing Ithaca because we know we will face a well-coached and very sound, good hitting team," Head Coach Luke Wesneski said. "It was really the tale of two games as we just couldn't get anything going game one, but figured a few things out game two and made some key adjustments. Megan [Bennett] threw a great game to hold a potent offense to just three hits. Was proud of how we responded that second game and we hope to carry that momentum into tomorrows games at Behrend!"

Game One
Alfred University – 0 | Ithaca College  – 8

After a scoreless first inning, Ithaca scored was would be the game-winning run in the bottom of the second inning with a home run to left center field. They tacked on two runs in both the bottoms of the third and fourth inning for a 5-0 lead before walking off in the bottom of the sixth inning with a single RBI double and a two-run home run, from the same player who hit the one in the second inning. Samantha Vidal (Lake Worth, FL/Forest Hill) was the only Saxon bat to register more than one hit, going 3-for-2 and stole one base.

Game Two
Alfred University – 11 | Ithaca College – 0

The Saxons piled four runs on in the first inning to pace themselves for the win. Mya Wells (San Ramon, CA/California) hit a solo home run to right field that ultimately became the game-winning run. Jessica Remm (Carmel, IN/Carmel) followed with her own home run to right field. An error by the Bombers second base player allowed Abigail Gatza (Burlington, ON, Canada/Assumption Catholic) and Meghan Neto (Miami, FL/Doral Academy Charter) to both score to make it a 4-0 win.

Wells doubled in the top of the second inning to score Vidal and make it a 5-0 game. She did the same thing in the top of the fourth inning with a double to right field that brought Kody Watson (Flagstaff, AZ/Coconino) home for the 6-0 advantage. Gatza picked up an RBI when she grounded out to the second base player but giving Wells time to up the score to 7-0.

In the sixth inning, after Wells doubled to right center field and Remm singled up the middle, Gatza homered to left field to make it 10-0. Destiny Avila (Long Beach, CA/St. Anthony) recorded an RBI when she was safe at first base on an catching error that allowed Neto to cross home for the 11-0 finish.

Wells was a perfect, 4-for-4 from the plate with three doubles, one home run, three RBI and three runs. Gatza went 2-for-3 with a homer, four RBI and two runs while getting hit-by-pitch once. Remm and Neto added two runs while also having the only stolen bases for the Saxons. Neto was hit-by-pitch twice.

Megan Bennett (Athens, PA/Athens Area) pitched all six innings with two strikeouts and only three hits. She is now 8-3 on the season.

The Saxons will next travel to Penn State Behrend on Wednesday, April 10 for a 3:00pm and 5:00pm doubleheader in non-conference action.
