ERIE, PA – The Alfred University softball team split a non-conference doubleheader with Penn State Behrend on Wednesday evening from the road.
The Saxons (12-10, 2-2 Empire 8) dropped game one, 5-2, before reversing the score in the nightcap, winning, 5-2 over the Lions (16-8, 4-0 AMCC).
Game One
Alfred University – 2 | Penn State Behrend – 5
Behrend got the early, 5-0 lead after the first inning before both teams saw two scoreless innings.
Meghan Neto (Miami, FL/Doral Academy Charter) doubled to the left field in the top of the fourth inning to bring home
Jessica Remm (Carmel, IN/Carmel) and
Abigail Gatza (Burlington, ON, Canada/Assumption Catholic). The remainder of the game would go on to be scoreless, resulting in the 5-2 loss for the Saxons.
Mya Wells (San Ramon, CA/California) broke the Alfred University school record for doubles in a career, hitting her 44
th in game one, surpassing
Nicole Maher '16. Wells was 2-for-3 from the plate in the opening game on Wednesday. Gatza also hit a double in the game, joining Wells and Neto.
Game Two
Alfred University – 5 | Penn State Behrend – 2
The Saxons were the team with the early lead after packing on four runs in the top of the second inning. Neto started with a home run to left field that cleared the bases of Gatza for the early, 2-0 lead.
Kody Watson (Flagstaff, AZ/Coconino) tripled to right field that would go on to be the game-winning RBI and run from
Isabella Orozco (Burbank, CA/Village Christian). Samantha Vidal (Lake Worth, FL/Forest Hill) brought Watson home with a single to center field for the 4-0 lead.
The Lions scored one run in the bottom of the fourth inning and another in the bottom of the sixth.
Wells drove home Watson in the top of the seventh inning for the final insurance run and ultimate final score of 5-2.
Megan Bennett (Athens, PA/Athens Area) continues to be effective inside of the pitching circle, striking out six batters in the seven innings pitched.
The Saxons will next close out their week with a pair of Empire 8 games at Keuka College on Friday, April 12 at 3:00pm and 5:00pm.
