HOUGHTON, NY – The Alfred University baseball team wrapped up their weekend with a pair of losses to Utica University on Sunday.
The Saxons lost the first game in a competitive 9-3 fashion, while dropping the second leg of the double-header, 28-0.
Game One
Anthony Cortez (Los Angeles, CA/Legacy) got the nod for the Saxons in the first game, as he remained on the mound across all seven innings while striking out four batters. Cortez is now the first member of Alfred University baseball to throw a complete game.
The first run for AU came in the third inning, as a double from
Nolan Pridmore (Toronto, ON, Canada/Etobicoke Collegiate Institute) drove in
Jeff Petrozzini (Hopewell, NJ/Hopewell Valley). In the following inning, the Saxons loaded up the bases before
Michael Ciardiello (Rutherford, NJ/Moore Catholic) was hit by a pitch. Moments later, an RBI single from Petrozzini drove in Cortez to cut the deficit for Alfred University.
Utica answered with five runs in the second inning, with additional support coming in the later innings to close out the first game with a win.
Game Two
The Saxons relied on four different pitchers in the second game, with
Aaron Buck (Houghton, NY/Fillmore) throwing the first 2.1 innings.
The lone hit for Alfred University came in the bottom half of the second inning, as
Cameron Brought (Wellsboro, PA/Wellsboro Area) recorded a single to move
Benjamin Weimer (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) into scoring position.
The Saxons couldn't drive in any run support, while the Pioneers relied on consistent offense to close out the afternoon with a sweep.
Alfred University will next conclude their series against Utica University with a single game on Monday at 11:00 AM at Houghton University.
