ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University women's lacrosse team continued Empire 8 competition with a 15-5 loss to Nazareth University on Wednesday from Yunevich Stadium.
Kylee Bedette (Waterloo, NY/Waterloo) finished the game with one goal and one assist.
Amelia Booth (Staatsburg, NY/FDR) and
Hailey Stroh (Houghton, NY/Homeschool) each recorded two goals.
Alyssa Piechota (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) added 11 saves in goal and picked up six ground balls for AU.
"Nazareth is a tough opponent," Head Coach
Julie Decker said. "Our defense played well, but we were playing a lot of it. We needed to take more time with our possessions to allow our defenders and midfielders more of a rest and put us in a better position to score."
Alfred University was the first to score in the opening quarter, as an assist from Bedette to Stroh gave the Saxons the initial lead. Nazareth responded with seven consecutive goals of their own to close out the first quarter, forcing AU to play from behind.
Alescia Nitti (Brewster, NY/Brewster) dished an assist to Booth in the early moments of the second quarter. Moments later, Stroh found the back of the net to cut the deficit for Alfred University. The Golden Flyers added one goal of their own before taking an 8-3 lead into halftime.
The Saxons were held without a goal in the third quarter, with Booth ultimately scoring with just under 10 minutes remaining in the final quarter of action. Bedette scored her first goal of the afternoon in the closing minutes, but insurance goals from Nazareth were enough to close out the game with a win.
Alfred University will next travel to face Russell Sage College on Saturday at 3:00 PM.
