Late Heroics Sends Women's Lacrosse Past Westminster

NEW WILMINGTON, PA – The Alfred University women's lacrosse team secured their first win of the spring season following a 12-11 win over Westminster College on Wednesday.

The Saxons (1-2, 0-0 Empire 8) relied on goals from four different players as part of their win.

Amelia Booth (Staatsburg, NY/FDR) led Alfred University with a team-high five goals. Morgan Wise (Kittanning, PA/Armstrong) totaled four points from three goals and an assist. Kylee Bedette (Waterloo, NY/Waterloo) was credited with the game-winning goal. Alyssa Piechota (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) eclipsed 500 career saves with Alfred University, becoming the fourth player in program history to do so.

"I'm really proud of the way we overcame adversity throughout the game," Head Coach Julie Decker said. "It was a hard-fought battle in which we maintained our composure and perservered. We came up with some key defensive stops and draw controls. We really stepped up in the fourth quarter to go on a run and put the game away."

Wise was the first to score for the Saxons in the opening quarter. Westminster responded with two goals of their own to take a 2-1 lead into the second quarter. Booth immediately opened the second quarter with a goal to equalize the game. Man-up goals from Wise and Hailey Stroh (Houghton, NY/Homeschool) gave Alfred University the advantage. Westminster tied the game, but Wise found the back of the net and Alfred University was ahead 5-4 going into the break.

Westminster scored five consecutive goals in the second half before the Saxons relied on a goal from Booth to cut the deficit. A goal from Westminster was answered by goals from Booth and Bedette with just over eight minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. Westminster scored once more, but three goals between Booth and Stroh tied the game with less than five minutes remaining. Bedette was responsible for the go-ahead goal with less than three minutes to play. The defense limited Westminster to earn the victory through the final horn.

Alfred University will next travel to Hilbert College next Wednesday at 4:00 PM.
