Wells Hits Grand Slam and Solo Homer; Saxons Drop Two on Day Two of Spring Break

KISSIMMEE, FL – The Alfred University softball team dropped a pair of games during its second day in Florida during Spring Break on Monday.

The Saxons (1-3, 0-0 Empire 8) fell to Nebraska Wesleyan University in the morning matchup, 4-1 before a strong first inning by Buena Vista University held AU at-bay in the nightcap, 7-5.

Game One
Alfred University – 1 | Nebraska Wesleyan University – 4

The Saxons got down to an early, 3-0 deficit after three innings of play to the Prairie Wolves (3-3). Neb. Wesleyan added one more run in the bottom of the fifth for the 4-0 lead before Mya Wells (San Ramon, CA/California) hit a homerun to center field in the top of the sixth to avoid the shutout loss.

Megan Bennett (Athens, PA/Athens Area) struck out five batters while walking none in the loss, giving up only two earned runs.

Game Two
Alfred University – 5 | Buena Vista University – 7

Buena Vista put six runs on the board (three earned) in the first inning. It wasn't until the bottom of the third inning that AU got on the board, once again thanks to Wells sending air mail with the ball, hitting a grand slam to right field to score Destiny Avila (Long Beach, CA/St. Anthony), Jessica Remm (Carmel, IN/Carmel) and Samantha Vidal (Lake Worth, FL/Forest Hill) to bring the Saxons back within two, 6-4.

The Beavers (6-6) tacked on another run in the top of the seventh inning before Remm scored in the bottom of the seventh for the Saxons on a throwing error by the Beavers' shortstop.

The Saxons move to day three of their Florida trip with games back at Sleepy Hollow Sports Complex against Chatham University at 10:15am and Husson University at 12:30pm on Tuesday, March 5.
