LEESBURG, FL – The Alfred University softball team split a pair of games during its third game of Florida Spring Break Training on Tuesday.
 
The Saxons (2-4, 0-0 Empire 8) scored in four innings for a 9-3 win over Chatham University in the early game before dropping a 7-2 loss to Husson University.
 
Game One
Alfred University – 9 | Chatham University – 3
 
The game was all AU as the Saxons got out to a 4-0 lead after the top of the third inning as they never relinquished the advantage. The Cougars tacked two runs up on the board in the bottom of the fourth and what would be their final run in the bottom of the fifth, after AU scored one more time in the top of the inning for an AU, 5-3 lead. The Saxons got three insurance runs in the sixth inning and one more for emphasis in the seventh.
 
Nine Saxon batters registered hits, totaling 11 in the game. Mya Wells (San Ramon, CA/California) led the way with a 2-for-3 performance, scoring twice and driving in a run. Abigail Gatza (Burlington, ON, Canada/Assumption Catholic) went 2-for-2 with two RBI, Isabella Orozco (Burbank, CA/Village Christian) had two RBI and Jade Rhys Babas (Fairfield, CA/Angelo Rodriguez) had one hit for an RBI and two runs. AU totaled four stolen bases.
 
Mikaela Perez (Pomona, CA/Diamond Ranch) picked up the win in the game, pitching 3.0 innings and giving up one hit and striking out one batter. Kendall Steward (Kennedy, NY/Randolph) struck out batters four times and gave up two hits to close out the game.
 
Game Two
Alfred University – 2 | Husson University – 7
 
Despite the Saxons scoring first and last in the game, the Eagles putting up four runs in the top of the second and three in the top of the fifth proved too much of gap to close. Both Saxon runs were scored by Samantha Vidal (Lake Worth, FL/Forest Hill) with Wells driving in both.
 
Megan Bennett (Athens, PA/Athens Area) struck out three batters while Steward sat one while only giving up one hit.
 
The Saxons will enjoy a much-needed day of rest before returning to competition on Thursday, March 7 with two games at Fortune Road Athletic Complex in Kissimmee, FL. First game slated for 9:00am versus Simmons University and the second against Northland College at 1:30pm.
