AUBURNDALE, FL – The Alfred University baseball team came up short in a 10-4 loss to Northland College on Sunday evening. The Saxons played a single game, as there was an extensive weather delay.
Owen Jennings (Newcastle, ON, Canada St. Stephen's Secondary) had a stellar performance, finishing the game with 12 strikeouts across five innings in his first start of the spring season. Jennings struck out each of the first five batters he faced.
"We saw a lot of positive things from Owen on the mound tonight," Head Coach
Brian Kehew said. "We're excited to see what we he can do this season moving forward."
Alfred University was the first to get on the scoreboard in the fifth inning, as a sacrifice fly from
Benjamin Weimer (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) drove in
Jeff Petrozzini (Hopewell, NJ/Hopewell Valley). Moments later,
Gabe Cheddie (Toronto, ON, Canada Birchmount Park Collegiate Institute) recorded an RBI single to center field, allowing
Cameron Brought (Wellsboro, PA/Wellsboro Area) to score.
Northland took a brief 3-2 lead before an RBI double from Brought gave the lead back to AU. Northland responded with four runs in the bottom half of the inning, and scored again in the eighth inning, to distance their lead and close out the game with a win.
Alfred University will next take a day off before returning to action against Martin Luther College on Wednesday.
