Late Scoring Lifts Women's Lacrosse Past Thiel, 10-7

GREENVILLE, PA – The Alfred University women's lacrosse team relied on consistent scoring and stellar defense as part of a 10-7 win over Thiel College on Saturday.

The Saxons (3-5, 0-0 Empire 8) relied on goals from four different players as part of their win.

Amelia Booth (Staatsburg, NY/FDR) led Alfred University with four goals and an assist. Alescia Nitti (Brewster, NY/Brewster) finished the game with three goals. Hailey Stroh (Houghton, NY/Homeschool) added two goals to go with an assist for AU.

"Everybody contributed with a ground ball, a caused turnover, a key slid defensively, off-ball movement to occupy the defense, and quick ball movement," Head Coach Julie Decker said. "It was a smart team win where we took care of the details. Defensively, we executed the plan well with high awareness against #10 and covering the next-biggest threats. Alyssa stepped up with some huge saves and ground balls. Amelia had a big game, not only by scoring, but with coming up with 13 draw controls. Finally, Alescia was able to finish with some well-placed shots to seal the victory for us at the end."

Thiel was the first to get on the scoreboard in the opening quarter, but a goal from Booth moments later equalized the game. The Tomcats found the back of the net again before Booth recorded her second goal of the afternoon. Each side traded one more goal before the end of the first quarter, as Stroh scored for AU to tie the game 3-3 going into the second quarter. Kylee Bedette (Waterloo, NY/Waterloo) opened scoring for Alfred University within the first minute of the second quarter to give the Saxons their first lead of the game. Later in the quarter, Bedette dished an assist to Stroh to extend the lead for AU. Thiel scored once to cut their deficit, but AU was still ahead 5-4 going into the break.

Thiel was once again the first to score to begin the half, but Booth found the back of the net for the Saxons, completing her respective hat trick. Nitti got involved on the offensive end with her first goal of the afternoon with AU. The Tomcats scored in the final minute of the third quarter, but Alfred University led 7-6 with one quarter remaining. Thiel quickly tied the game in the opening moments of the fourth quarter, but Booth clinched her fourth goal of the game with just under 12 minutes to play. Consecutive goals from Nitti, along with stellar defense from the Saxons, ultimately secured the win.

Alfred University will next host SUNY Morrisville on Tuesday at 4:00 PM.
