Saxons Come Up Short to SUNY Potsdam in Overtime Effort

POTSDAM, NY – A competitive non-conference matchup for the Alfred University women's lacrosse team resulted in a 14-13 overtime loss to SUNY Potsdam on Saturday.

The Saxons (2-3, 0-0 Empire 8) forced 27 turnovers in their efforts.

Amelia Booth (Staatsburg, NY/FDR) led Alfred University with five points from three goals and two assists. Morgan Wise (Kittanning, PA/Armstrong) finished the game with three goals. Alescia Nitti (Brewster, NY/Brewster) added two goals and an assist for AU.

"We battled hard the whole game," Head Coach Julie Decker said. "It's tough to lose this one in overtime, but I'm really proud of the way we play hard, never give up, and continue to come together as a team."

An assist from Nitti to Hailey Stroh (Houghton, NY/Homeschool) put the Saxons on the scoreboard in the opening quarter. Potsdam tied the game before Wise gave the lead back to Alfred University. An additional goal from the Bears had the game tied 2-2 going into the second quarter.

Two quick goals in the second quarter from Potsdam forced the Saxons to play from behind. The offense for AU found its rhythm, as goals from Booth and Abigail Call (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy) equalized the game with over 12 minutes remaining in the first half. Stroh and Nitti each found the back of the net to have Alfred University ahead 4-2. Nitti scored once more, but Potsdam responded with three goals of their own as both teams entered halftime with a 7-7 tie.

Wise was the first to score for Alfred University in the second half. An equalizing goal from the Bears was answered with Booth's second goal of the afternoon. Potsdam tied the game again before Kylee Bedette (Waterloo, NY/Waterloo) found the back of the net. The Bears scored in the closing minutes of the third quarter, but a goal from Booth had the Saxons leading 11-10 going into the fourth quarter.

Two consecutive goals from Potsdam had Alfred University trailing to begin the final quarter of regulation. Call tied the game with just over nine minutes to play. During a man-up situation, Wise reached the back of the net to put AU ahead 13-12 with eight minutes remaining. Potsdam tied the game with under six minutes left in the fourth quarter and ultimately forced overtime. The Saxons continued to compete, but Potsdam came away with the game-winning goal.

Alfred University will next travel to face Daemen University on Tuesday at 5:00 PM.
