ROCHESTER, NY - The Alfred University men's basketball team closed its weekend at St. John Fisher University in Empire 8 play, falling 90-79 on Saturday.
Â
The Saxons (8-12, 5-6 Empire 8) totaled 44 points in the first half and 35 in the second but it was the Cardinals (15-7, 11-2 Empire 8) that held the scoring advantage in both halves on Saturday, 48 and 42 points in each.
Â
Oscar Wolter (Munich, Germany/Lycee Jean Renoir) recorded a Saxon career-high 22 points along with two steals and three rebounds.
Tyler Hind (Randolph, NY/Randolph) scored 19 points to go with one steal and four rebounds.
Adam Enders (Belfast, NY/Belfast) recorded nine points and five rebounds for AU.
Â
Despite facing an early seven-point deficit, 15-8 in the first half, AU climbed back to multiple one-point Fisher advantages until the first tie of the game occurred after
Franlys Valenzuela (Santiago de los Cabelleros, Dominican Republic/San Ysidro) put in a layup with four minutes remaining to play and sunk the and-one, making it 37-37. The Cardinals would build the lead back up to five points, 48-43 before
Gabe Eldaye (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna) hit a free throw, after being fouled on the final shot of the half from 3-point land, making it 48-44 in favor of the hosts going into the half.
Â
The Saxons fought to gain some momentum against the Cardinals as the teams went point for point early in the second half. Points scored by
Amoi Charles (Elmont, NY/H. Frank Carey), Elday, Enders and Wolter helped cut the deficit bringing the score to 72-68. However, the Cardinals went on a 6-0 run late in half to secure a 90-79 win against the Saxons.
Â
Alfred University will next host Houghton University on Tuesday, February 6 at 7:30pm in the Terry S. Galanis Family Arena.
