Fredonia Slips Past Women's Lacrosse in Season-Opener

FREDONIA, NY – A competitive effort from the Alfred University women's lacrosse team resulted in a 10-9 loss to Fredonia on Tuesday evening.

The Saxons (0-1, 0-0 Empire 8) picked up 22 ground balls as part of their season-opening efforts.

Amelia Booth (Staatsburg, NY/FDR) led Alfred University with a team-high four goals across six shots on goal. Hailey Stroh (Houghton, NY/Homeschool) scored twice. Morgan Wise (Kittanning, PA/Armstrong) added three points from two goals and an assist for AU.

"We left it all out on the field and proved that we can compete," Head Coach Julie Decker said. "We're looking forward to learning from tonight and continuing to build."

Fredonia scored in the opening stages of the first quarter before Wise got the Saxons on the scoreboard. The Blue Devils added two more goals before an assist from Wise to Stroh cut the deficit for Alfred University going into the second quarter. Three goals from Fredonia were answered by Booth's first goal of the spring season. Stroh closed in the closing seconds, but AU was behind 6-4 going into the break.

The offense for Alfred University began to find its rhythm in the second half, as Booth and Stroh each found the back of the net. Fredonia scored once more in the third quarter, but back-to-back goals from Booth gave AU their first lead of the evening going into the final quarter of regulation.

Fredonia was the first to strike in the final quarter, but Wise gave the lead back to Alfred University with just over five minutes remaining. The Blue Devils managed to find the back of the net with roughly 90 seconds left, forcing the game into overtime. Strong defense on both ends eventually led to Fredonia scoring in the third overtime period.

Alfred University will next host Grove City College on Monday as part of their two-game Spring Break stretch.
