WEBSTER, NY – The Alfred University men's swimming & diving team wrapped up Day Two of the Allegheny Empire Championships at the Webster Aquatic Center on Thursday evening.
The Saxons are in fourth place overall and are second within the Empire 8 with 327.50 points overall. They sit 46.5 points behind Hartwick who leads the way in the Empire 8 competition.
The 200-yard freestyle relay team of Colby Watkins (New Orleans, LA/St. Martin's Episcopal), Fernando Lagos (Tegucigalpa, Honduras/Escuela e Instituo Lincoln), Paul Tuttle (Irondequoit, NY Irondequoit), and Emmanuel Drappatz (Pittsburgh, PA/Fox Chapel Area) earned fifth place overall and were second place against Empire 8 opponents, earring the team All-Empire 8 Second Team in that event. They swam a 1:27.05, beating out Hartwick College by a mere .08 of a second.
The B-team of Emiliano Terrazas (La Paz, Bolivia/Saint Andrew's), Alessandro Lagos Canales (Tegucigalpa, Honduras/Escuela e Instituo Lincoln), Keagen Winkky (Horseheads, NY Horseheads) and Nathan Sponenberg (Bloomsburg, PA/Central Columbia) finished second in the early finals heat. They earned 18 points to go with the A-team's 36 points with a time of 1:29.74.
Giuseppe Piede (Dunellen, NJ/St. Peter's Prep) was the lone Saxon to make finals in the 500-yard freestyle and was able to qualify for A finals. His time of 4:56.04 earner him a 10th place finish in the event and tacked on 13 points to the Saxons total.
Wade LaMastus (Maumee, OH/Anthony Wayne), Phillip Volaski (Poughquag, NY/Arlington), and Terrazas all qualified for A-finals in the 200-yard IM and finished 7th, 8th, and 10th respectively. LaMastus came in with a time of 1:59.44, Terrazas 1:59:50, and Volaski with 2:01.77. Winkky also qualified for B-Finals in the 200-yard IM.
Colby Watkins (New Orleans, LA/St. Martin's Episcopal) earned his second All-Empire 8 Second Team recognition of the day with a third place overall and second among Empire 8 competitors in the 50-yard freestyle. He came in with a time of 21.63. Drappatz finished tied for 7th in the event and Fernando Lagos was close behind in 10th in A-finals. Tuttle also qualified for B-finals in the 50-yard freestyle.
AU will compete in time trials to start individual pool events tomorrow morning at 10:00am with finals slated to start later in the evening at 5:00pm as they return for Day Three of the Allegheny Empire Swimming & Diving Championships.
