OSWEGO, NY - A competitive non-conference outing for the Alfred University women's basketball team led to a 66-57 loss against Oswego State on Saturday afternoon.
Jaidyn Chest (Mayfield, NY/Mayfield) finished the game with 24 points, 10 rebounds and four assists.
Grace Rittenhouse (Dansville, NY/Dansville) totaled 14 points and three assists.
Natalee Collins (Waterville, NY/Waterville) grabbed eight rebounds for AU.
"A tough loss on the road today," Head Coach
Mike Moskowitz said. "They're a really solid defensive team and really make you work for everything offensively. I think there are some detail things we need to clean up coming out of break. We're excited to do that together after some time away with family and friends."
The Saxons were forced to play from behind early in the opening quarter, as the Lakers began the game on a 15-5 run. Alfred University answered with a 10-0 run of their own in which Rittenhouse scored six points during the stretch, as the Saxons tied the game 15-15 entering the second quarter. Rittenhouse and Chest each added a three-point shot to open the second quarter to extend the lead for AU. Neither side led by more than two points across the final seven minutes of the half, but a layup from Chest gave the Saxons a 34-32 advantage going into the break.
A layup from Chest was followed by a shot from
Jessica Beehler (Dunkirk, NY/Dunkirk) in the third quarter, as Alfred University led by as many as seven points. The defense held the Lakers to just a pair of points across the final three minutes of the quarter, as AU entered the fourth quarter with a 49-45 advantage. Chest opened scoring for the Saxons in the final quarter with a shot from beyond the arc. A 7-0 run by Oswego had Alfred University trailing by a point, but a three-point shot by
Samantha Fischer (Wappingers Falls, NY/Our Lady of Lourdes) gave the advantage back to the Saxons with just over four minutes to play. The Lakers ended the game on a 13-2 run across the final four minutes and ultimately came away with the win.
Alfred University will next enjoy some time off before traveling to face Buffalo State College on Tuesday, December 3 at 5:30 PM.
