ELMIRA, NY - Three goals in the second half for the Alfred University women's soccer team led to a 3-1 win over Elmira College on Saturday afternoon.
"It's nice to come away with a win today," Head Coach
Craig Yanni said. "Unfortunately, we started off slow, resulting in us to be down at halftime. I thought the team did a great job of responding to the messaging at halftime and really came out with a different level of play in the second half to help us get the win."
Defense was key in the opening half for both sides, with the Saxons recording the first shot on goal thanks to
Nyah Solly (Colden, NY/Springville-Griffith Institute) in the 19th minute. Elmira found the back of the net in the closing stages of the first half, taking a 1-0 lead into the break. An assist from
Abby Scanlan (Albion, NY/Charles D'Amico) to
Kayla Silverstein (North Chili, NY/Churchville-Chili) for the Saxons early in the second half equalized the game. Less than five minutes later, Scanlan found Silverstein once again for the go-ahead goal. Scanlan capped off her impressive afternoon with her third goal of the season, as the Saxons extended their advantage and came out with the win.
Alfred University will next host Utica University next Saturday at 6:00 PM.
