ROCHESTER, NY -- Alfred University's men's swimming & diving opened up the 2024-25 campaign on the road at RIT with plenty of positives despite the 223-77 loss.
Carlos Gonzalez (Baja California, Mexico/Unifront) took first in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 1:57.01, defeating the rest of the field by over four seconds and won the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:07.79, almost 10 seconds ahead of the next-closest finisher. He also finished second in the second 100-yard breaststroke with a 59:11, just shy of the winning time of 59.06.
"Our first year guys looked great and it was great to be able to give RIT some races and competition on the boards, knowing that in some of those events are several athletes that have been to the NCAA Championships," Head Coach
Brian Striker '00 said. "We are looking forward to continuing to grow and better ourselves over the next few weeks!"
Jaxson McQuaid (Norwalk, CT/Norwalk) set his collegiate best score in fashion on the 1-meter diving board, scoring 231.05 points to take second out of the six divers competing.
Sean Killian (Kenmore, NY/St. Joseph's Collegiate Institution) opened up his first career collegiate meet with a third place finish in the 1,000-yard freestyle to open the night for the Saxons, wrapping up a time of 10:30.39.
Emiliano Terrazas (La Paz, Bolivia/Saint Andrew's) and
Emmanuel Drappatz (Pittsburgh, PA/Fox Chapel Area) would also find the podium as third place finishers. Drappatz with a 1:51.19 in the 200-yard freestyle and Terrazas in the 200-yard breaststroke at 2:15.17.
William LaMastus (Maumee, OH/Anthony Wayne) followed suit with a third place finish of his own in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 54:31 and was second in the 200-yard backstroke wrapping up a 2:01.26.
"We knew that rolling starting off our season against #18 ranked RIT would be a difficult way to start a season," Coach Striker said. "We have been working pretty hard the past few weeks so there was a little bit of fatigue evident."
The next meet will come at home against SUNY Brockport and cross-street neighbors Alfred State. The Saxons home-opener on October 26 gets started at 1:00 pm.
