Football Falls to Mustangs, 24-14

MORRISVILLE, NY – The Alfred University football team continued their fall season with a 24-14 loss to SUNY Morrisville on Saturday afternoon from Drake Field.

Chris Kelly (Lake Ronkonkoma, NY/Lake Ronkonkoma) finished the game with 152 passing yards and a touchdown, completing 12-of-28 pass attempts. Kelly added a team-high 59 rushing yards to go with a touchdown from the ground game. Dion Anderson (Buffalo, NY/St. Joseph's Collegiate Institute) totaled a team-high 81 receiving yards from five receptions. Nicholas McLetchie-Goldman (Rexford, NY/Shenendehowa) led the AU defense with 10 tackles, six of which were solo.

"I'm really disappointed about the outcome of today's game," Head Coach Bob Rankl said. "Unfortunately, I don't believe that we played our best football today and that is ultimately what cost us the game. We are going to regroup and reload and prepare for the defending National Champions this week."

A turnover by Alfred University in the opening quarter resulted in Morrisville finding the end zone three plays later for the initial lead. In the second quarter, an 11-yard passing touchdown from Kelly to Carmine Hoag (Salamanca, NY/Salamanca) equalized the game. The touchdown reception for Hoag was the first of his collegiate career. In the following drive, the AU defense stepped up to force a turnover on downs on their own 25-yard line. Neither side got back on the scoreboard before entering halftime with a 7-7 tie. The Mustangs put up 14 points in the third quarter to force the Saxons offense to play from behind. The lone touchdown for AU in the second half came in the fourth quarter, as a five-yard rushing touchdown was credited to Kelly in the closing minute of regulation.

Alfred University will next return home to host Division III National Champions SUNY Cortland on Saturday at 1:00 PM.
