ELMIRA, NY – Effective shooting from the Alfred University men's basketball team led to a 71-66 win over Elmira College on Thursday night.
The Saxons (8-10, 5-4 Empire 8) shot over 40 percent from both the field and three-point range against the Soaring Eagles (7-11, 3-6 Empire 8) as part of their win.
Adam Enders (Belfast, NY/Belfast) led Alfred University with a game-high 25 points to go with six rebounds.
Tyler Hind (Randolph, NY/Randolph) recorded 22 points in his season debut.
Oscar Wolter (Munich, Germany/Lycee Jean Renoir) added 13 points and eight boards for the Saxons.
"Any road conference win is a good win, so we're excited about tonight," Head Coach
Erich Kaempffe said. "We're also excited to have a little time off now to rest and recover and get better, because we have a lot to work on."
The offense ran through Enders to begin the opening half, as he scored the team's first eight points. A 16-0 run by the Saxons had the team leading by as many as 11 points. The Soaring Eagles responded with a 9-1 run that was snapped by a three-point shot from Hind. Both Hind and
Amoi Charles (Elmont, NY/H. Frank Casey) scored within the final minute, as AU led 33-27 going into halftime.
Deep shots from Enders and Wolter extended the lead for the Saxons in the early stages of the second half. The Soaring Eagles put together a 9-0 run to tie the game with 13 minutes remaining. Alfred University trailed by as many as five points before important shots from Wolter and Enders tied the game once again. Four consecutive deep shots from Hind gave the Saxons the lead with just over four minutes to play. A 9-0 run for the Saxons extended the lead with under three minutes remaining. Elmira was able to cut the game down to three points with under a minute to play, but key free throws from
Tyler Curran (Allegany, NY/Allegany-Limestone) were enough to secure the win for AU.
Alfred University will next return next Friday on the road against Nazareth University at 7:30 PM.
