Women's Tennis Strong Start Continues With 8-1 Win Over Lycoming

WILLIAMSPORT, PA– Impressive performances from both doubles and singles action resulted in an 8-1 win for the Alfred University women's team against Lycoming College on Wednesday from Brandon Park.

"What a great match today!" Head Coach Jordan Crouch said. "It was a great effort from our team from top to bottom. A special shoutout to Alliso for getting her first collegiate singles victory. This was a big momentum victory for us. Anna also had a massive come-from-behind win. I'm so happy with the job they did today. Now get ready for two big matches next Sunday and Monday at our house!"

The Saxons (3-0, 0-0 Empire 8) relied on the early success of Macy Youngberg (Falconer, NY/Falconer Central) and Alina Zabihailo (Kyiv, Ukraine/Educational Complex #143) from No. 1 doubles, as they won in 8-2 fashion. Youngberg later competed from No. 2 singles, winning 6-1, 6-3. Zabihailo continued her strong start to the fall season with a 6-0, 6-3 victory from No. 1 singles.

The efforts of Anna Gwozdz (South Wales, NY/Iroquois) and Alexis Giordano (Lewiston, NY/Lewiston-Porter) resulted in an 8-1 victory from No. 1 doubles for Alfred University. Gwozdz later battled from No. 3 singles, clinching wins in both the first and third sets for the Saxons.

Elizabeth Madsen (Portland, OR/Grant) was the first Saxon to secure a point from singles action at the No. 4 position, not allowing a single point during her 6-0, 6-0 victory. Abigail Call (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy) and Allison Windisch (Pittsford, NY/Sutherland) each picked up wins from No. 5 and No. 6, respectively, to round out the successful evening for the Saxons.The win for Windisch marked her first collegiate singles victory with Alfred University. 

The Saxons will next begin at a four-match home slate on Saturday against Mount Aloysius College at 1:00 PM.
