Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Matthew Wedzik

Saxons Roll to 6-1 Victory over Panthers

SALAMANCA, NY – The Alfred University Men's Soccer team picked up their first win on the season with an emphatic win 6-1 over University of Pittsburgh at Bradford.

The Saxons were led by Juan Jose Menendez Gutierrez (Villanueva Cañada, Madrid, Spain/Woodstock Academy) with a goal and three assists. Both the goal and assists were the first of his young career as a Saxon.

Chase Freeland (Hornell, NY/Hornell), Ian Landsittel (New Providence, NJ/New Providence), Christian Moon (Syracuse, NY/East Syracuse Minoa), and Noam Sokolovsky (East Lyme, CT/East Lyme) all scored their first goals of the season. Gavin Culley (Encinitas, CA/San Dieguito Academy) netted his second of the season.

"Extremely proud of the team effort the boys put out tonight. We went down after a freak goal and rebounded really well after, scoring six unanswered." Head Coach Tracy Blake said.

The Saxons scored three goals in both halves, with a different goal scorer for each of their six goals on the night. Landsittel headed home his first career college goal to start the second half off of a beautiful Nick Flemmer (Corning, NY Corning-Painted Post) pass for his first career assist. Alfred University will look to build on their undefeated start to the season at their home tournament this weekend.

"Everyone who saw time kept the level high and performed to the expectations of the group. A great way to cap off three games unbeaten to start the year, a first for the program since 2003." Blake said. "We will enjoy it and get right back to work tomorrow to prepare for our home tournament this weekend."

Alfred University will return home for their annual Bryan Karl Tournament this Saturday and Sunday when they host Marietta College and Bryant & Stratton College. The first of the two games is scheduled for 2:30 PM on Saturday against Marietta College.
