Women's Soccer Drops Non-Conference Loss to SUNY Oneonta

ONEONTA, NY – Scoring in both halves from SUNY Oneonta resulted in a 4-1 win over the Alfred University women's soccer team on Tuesday afternoon from the Red Dragon Field.

The Saxons (0-2, 0-0 Empire 8) recorded 10 shots, while the Red Dragons (1-0-1, 0-0 SUNYAC) finished the game with six corner kick opportunities.

Alyssa Smith (Pearl River, NY/Pearl River) notched her first goal of the fall season for AU in the second half. Olivia Gilbert (Ontario, NY/Wayne Central) and Sidney Khuns (Spencerport, NY/Spencerport) each ended the game with two shots, with one being on goal. Abby Scanlan (Albion, NY/Charles D'Amico) added two additional shots for the Saxons.

"This was a tough one tonight," Head Coach Craig Yanni said. "It certainly was not the outcome that we were looking for. The coaching staff needs to do better to get our team to be more competitive."

Alfred University came out strong defensively to begin the opening half of action, rejecting SUNY Oneonta's first five shots and five corner kick opportunities. Two goals from the Red Dragons within the final ten minutes of the first half left the Saxons with a 2-0 deficit going into the break. SUNY Oneonta came out firing in the second half, as an additional goal extended their lead over Alfred University. Later in the half, a yellow card led to a penalty kick goal for Smith to get the Saxons on the scoreboard. The Red Dragons scored once more to ultimately secure the win.

"We are looking forward to facing a very quality Rochester team on Thursday for our home opener," Yanni said.

Alfred University will next return home to host the University of Rochester on Thursday at 6:00 PM.
