Women's Tennis Secures 9-0 Win Over Houghton

ALFRED, NY - The Alfred University women's tennis team maintained their perfect home record following a 9-0 win over Houghton University on Saturday from the Saxons Tennis Courts.

The win for the Saxons (10-1, 4-0 Empire 8) marks their first victory over the Highlanders (0-9, 0-4 Empire 8) dating back to the 2018-19 season.

"Today was a great effort from our entire team," Head Coach Jordan Crouch said. "Houghton has always played us tough and we didn't always play perfect, but we got the job done. Special shoutout to Lex and Silvia on getting big tiebreak wins at the end. As we head into or last regular season week, there's much to improve upon, but I'm so excited to tackle it with this squad.

Anna Gwozdz (South Wales, NY/Iroquois) and Alexis Giordano (Lewiston, NY/Lewiston-Porter) were the first to record a win for the Saxons following an 8-1 win from No. 3 doubles. Gwozdz later appeared in No. 1 singles for the Saxons, winning 6-2, 6-2. Giordano battled from No. 6 singles, securing wins in the first and third sets.

Abigail Call (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy) and Elizabeth Madsen (Portland, OR/Grant) played well from No. 2 doubles, winning 8-0. Madsen continued her great start to the season with a 6-1, 6-1 win from No. 2 singles, while Call picked up a 6-1, 6-1 victory from No. 3 singles.

Macy Youngberg (Falconer, NY/Falconer Central) and Alina Zabihailo (Kyiv, Ukraine/Educational Complex #143) rounded out doubles efforts for the Saxons from the No. 1 position, picking up the 8-4 win. Silvia Palermo (Rochester, NY/Irondequoit) appeared in No. 6 singles for the Saxons, battling as part of a 6-0, 8-6 win.

Alfred University will next travel to face Hartwick next Saturday at 1:00 PM.
