CORTLAND, NY – The Alfred University women's tennis team wrapped up their final non-conference matchup of the fall season with a 5-4 loss to SUNY Cortland on Wednesday afternoon.
"Cortland is a great program and it's always a battle with them," Head Coach
Jordan Crouch said. "We left a few points on the table today and unfortunately; you can't do that against teams like them. We got a lot of feedback on what we can do to improve as we head into the rest of our conference season coming up. Congrats to Abby and Macy for reaching the 50 career wins mark. Their dedication to the program and hard work has paid off and I am so proud of them!"
The Saxons (9-1, 3-0 Empire 8) relied on the efforts of
Macy Youngberg (Falconer, NY/Falconer Central) and
Alina Zabihailo (Kyiv, Ukraine/Educational Complex #143) from No. 1 doubles, as they won in 8-4 fashion. The win for Youngberg in doubles marked her 50th career win with the women's tennis program. Zabihailo later appeared in No. 1 singles, recording a 7-6, 6-4 victory.
Alfred University concluded their doubles play with an impressive performance from
Abigail Call (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy) and
Elizabeth Madsen (Portland, OR/Grant) from the No. 2 position, as they secured an 8-4 win. With the victory, Call joined Youngbebrg with her 50th career win with the program.
The Saxons continued to put together competitive performances in singles action.
Allison Windisch (Pittsford, NY/Sutherland) played well from the No. 6 position, winning both the first and third sets for AU.
Alfred University will next return to Empire 8 competition when they host Houghton University on Saturday at 1:00 PM.
