HOUGHTON, NY – The Alfred University women's tennis team wrapped up their week with a 6-3 conference win over Nazareth University on Saturday.
The Saxons (9-0, 3-0 Empire 8) defeated the Golden Flyers (1-2, 1-1 Empire 8) for the first time since the 2014 season.
"This was a great team win for us," Head Coach
Jordan Crouch said. "We needed everyone in the lineup to pull through for us and we got that. Nazareth is a great program and for us to get a win like that helps affirm that our hard work has been worth it. We have some things to fix in practice this week before we travel to Cortland and eventually host Houghton on Saturday. Go Saxons!"
Abigail Call (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy) and
Elizabeth Madsen (Portland, OR/Grant) were the first to get the Saxons on the scoreboard following an 8-2 win from No. 2 doubles. Call was also the first to record a point for AU in singles action, winning 6-2, 6-0 from the No. 5 position. Madsen was successful at No. 4 singles, securing a 6-0, 6-4 victory. The combined efforts of
Anna Gwozdz (South Wales, NY/Iroquois) and
Allison Windisch (Pittsford, NY/Sutherland) resulted in an 8-2 win from No. 3 doubles. Gwozdz was efficient in singles play, winning both the first and third sets for Alfred University at the No. 3 position. Windisch ultimately secured the match-clinching point for the Saxons following a 6-2, 7-5 win from No. 6 singles.
Alfred University will next travel to face SUNY Cortland in a non-conference matchup on Wednesday at 3:30 PM.
