ROCHESTER, NY – The Alfred University women's tennis team battled as part of a 6-3 conference win over St. John Fisher University on Saturday from the Mendon Courts.
The Saxons (8-0, 2-0 Empire 8) continued their perfect start to the season over the Cardinals (1-3, 0-1 Empire 8). This is the first year dating back to the 2004-05 perfect season in which the Saxons have won each of their first eight contests.
"Today was such a great match for our team," Head Coach
Jordan Crouch said. "We got to battle against a great Fisher team, and we came out on top. I'm so proud of our team for working their butts off to come out with the win. The atmosphere was loud and such a fun one to play in. Special shoutout to Abby coming from behind in her second set and Alina for getting a huge win for us in No. 1 singles. Alina was down 0-3 in the third set and saved three match points en route to a comeback win. I'm so proud of our team and can't wait to play again tomorrow against Naz. Let's go Saxons!"
Abigail Call (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy) and
Elizabeth Madsen (Portland, OR/Grant) were the first to record a point for the Saxons from No. 2 doubles, winning in 8-3 fashion. Call later fought hard from No. 5 singles, winning in three sets and eventually securing the clinching point for AU.
Macy Youngberg (Falconer, NY/Falconer Central) and
Alina Zabihailo (Kyiv, Ukraine/Educational Complex #143) continued their strong start from No. 1 doubles, picking up an 8-3 victory. Youngberg recorded her 49
th career win following a 6-3, 6-3 victory from No. 2 singles. Zabihailo was competitive from No. 1 singles, battling back after being down 0-3 in the third set before securing a 6-4, 4-6, 7-5 win.
Anna Gwozdz (South Wales, NY/Iroquois) played well from No. 3 singles for the Saxons, winning 6-0, 6-4.
Alfred University will next compete against Nazareth University on Sunday at 1:00 PM. The contest will take place at Houghton, due to the weather.
