Women's Tennis Edges Out Fredonia, 5-4

ALFRED, NY - Strong singles performances from the Alfred University women's tennis team resulted in a 5-4 win over Fredonia State College on Saturday afternoon from the Alfred University Tennis Courts.

"Today was a challenge for sure," Head Coach Jordan Crouch said. "Fredonia played a very challenging style for our team and it took quite a bit of time before we really felt comfortable playing out there. We need to work on some footwork things and dealing with different play styles. I challenged the team after doubles to dig deep and find that next gear to allow us to come out on top. I'm so proud of all of the effort in singles and I'm happy that we got out of it with a win. Props to Liz for getting a huge win for us in only her second collegiate match. I'm very excited to see how she blossoms as the year goes on. A special shout out to Abby as well. She was able to turn around after a disappointing doubles match and get a much-needed win at No. 5 today. I'm very proud of the of the effort and resiliency of my squad and I'm eager to get back out on the courts to train on Monday! 2-0 through the first weekend is always fun!"

The efforts of Macy Youngberg (Falconer, NY/Falconer Central) and Alina Zabihailo (Kyiv, Ukraine/Educational Complex #143) were enough to secure an 8-3 win from No. 1 doubles for the Saxons to begin the afternoon. Zabihailo picked up an additional victory for Alfred University from No. 1 singles in 6-0, 6-1 fashion. Abigail Call (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy) earned a crucial win for AU from No. 5 singles, winning 6-2, 6-1. The Blue Devils continued to compete, but a hard-fought 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 win from Elizabeth Madsen (Portland, OR/Grant) from No. 4 was enough to secure the win for AU.

Alfred University will next continue their season on the road against Lycoming College on Wednesday at 4:00 PM.
