ALFRED, NY - The Alfred University women's tennis team celebrated their Senior Day with a 9-0 win over Utica University on Saturday from the Saxons Tennis Courts.
"Today we got to celebrate our seniors and they were the ones to lead us into battle," Head Coach
Jordan Crouch said. "All five of them got to play doubles and we got off to a strong 3-0 start. We were able to use that momentum as we got into singles and got a big win today. Congrats to Ana on her first collegiate win! She has worked hard in the past few weeks and it paid off today. First Empire 8 opponent down! Go Saxons!"
Alina Zabihailo (Kyiv, Ukraine/Educational Complex #143) and
Macy Youngberg (Falconer, NY/Falconer Central) were successful from No. 1 doubles for AU, winning in 8-3 fashion. Zabihailo later appeared in No. 1 singles for the Saxons, securing a 6-4, 6-2 victory. Youngberg did not lose a single game from No. 2 singles during her 6-0, 6-0 win.
Anna Gwozdz (South Wales, NY/Iroquois) and
Ana Ion (Bucharest, Romania/Episcopal School of Jacksonville) were impressive from No. 3 doubles, winning 8-3. The win for Ion was the first of her collegiate career with Alfred University. Gwozdz competed in No. 3 singles, ultimately winning in 6-1, 6-1 fashion.
Abigail Call (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy) and
Alexis Giordano (Lewiston, NY/Lewiston-Porter) rounded out doubles play for the Saxons, winning in 8-5 fashion. Both Call and Giordano rounded out their afternoons with singles victories to capitalize on the conference win for AU.
Alfred University will next travel to compete against St. John Fisher University next Saturday at 1:00 PM.
