ONEONTA, NY – The Alfred University Men's Soccer team dropped their opening match in Empire-8 play to Hartwick College by a score of 2-0.
The Saxons were led by Gavin Culley (Encinitas, CA/San Dieguito Academy) and William Moore (Stormville, NY John Jay) who both recorded two shots in the game. Goalkeeper Matthew Osmundson (Draper, UT/Juan Diego Catholic) recorded four saves for AU.
"A poor effort by the team in the first half led to a 2-0 loss." Head Coach Tracy Blake said. "We didn't do any of the basics needed to compete in the first 45 minutes and we gave away (by the standards we have set) two soft goals."
Alfred conceded both goals in the first half and fought to bring the game back but were unable to find the back of the net. The Saxons outshot the Hawks 6-5 in the second half but came up short in the end. Alfred University will look to bounce back in Empire-8 play next weekend at home against Keuka College.
"We competed well in the second half but couldn't put any of our chances away." Blake said. "Very disappointing start to the E-8 campaign."
Alfred University will next play across the street against Alfred State College for the first ever regular season Alfred Derby. The match is set to kickoff at 7 PM on Wednesday, September 20th.
