Saxons Force 1-1 Draw Against Fredonia

FREDONIA, NY – A competitive non-conference matchup between the Alfred University women's soccer team and Fredonia resulted in a 1-1 draw on Tuesday night from University Stadium.

The Saxons (1-3-1, 0-0 Empire 8) faced18 shots on goal and 6 corner kick attempts from the Blue Devils (2-2-1, 0-0 SUNYAC) in their efforts.

Alfred University was led by Julia Flaitz (Arkport, NY/Arkport Central), who scored her first goal of the fall season. Alyssa Smith (Pearl River, NY/Pearl River) dished one assist. Kiani Barnard-Pratt (Westford, MA/Westford Academy) recorded a career-high 16 saves for AU.

"The defense battled for 90 minutes against a very athletic Fredonia team," Head Coach Craig Yanni said. "Kiani was huge for us in the goal and made some key saves."

The Saxons set the tone early in the opening half, as Kayla Silverstein (North Chili, NY/Churchville-Chili) attempted two shots, with one being on goal, across the first six minutes of action. The defense successfully defended 5 shots from the Devils before a pass from Smith to Flaitz found its way to the back of the net for AU. Fredonia attempted 6 more shots before Alfred University carried a 1-0 lead going into halftime.

In the second half, the Devils recorded 9 consecutive shots before Silverstein recorded her second shot on goal of the evening. Fredonia eventually found an opening in the 72nd minute to tie the game. Silverstein recorded one more shot on goal in the final minutes, but neither side was able to take a lead before the final horn.

"We are excited to get back to practice the next few days and prepare for our Empire 8 opener," Yanni said. "Tonight was a great game to show us what we need to work on before Saturday."

Alfred University will next open Empire 8 competition when they host St. John Fisher University on Saturday at 6:00 PM.
