ALFRED, NY - A competitive outing for the Alfred University women's soccer team resulted in a 1-1 draw against St. John Fisher University on Saturday evening from Yunevich Stadium.
Three of the past four outings between the Saxons (1-3-2, 0-0-1 Empire 8) and the Cardinals (2-2-2, 0-0-1 Empire 8) have now gone on to end in a draw dating back to the 2021 season.
Alfred University was led by
Abby Scanlan (Albion, NY/Charles D'Amico), who recorded her third goal of the season from a team-high four shots.
Kiani Barnard-Pratt (Westford, MA/Westford Academy) recorded eight saves in goal for the Saxons.
"It's good to get a result out of the first Empire 8 contest of the year," Head Coach
Craig Yanni said. "I thought the team really battled hard against a good St. John Fisher team."
The Saxons defense stepped up early in the opening half, rejecting the first six shots from St. John Fisher. A goal from the Cardinals in the 22nd minute put Alfred University into an early deficit. Later in the half, Scanlan was able to equalize the score in the 38th minute before each side went into the break with a 1-1 tie. In the second half, the Saxons offense remained aggressive, forcing three shots across the first six minutes of action. Five different players from AU recorded a shot in the second half, but neither side was able to reach the back of the net before the final horn.
"Ithaca is going to be a tough game for us," Yanni said. "It will be good to get back to work Monday and keep improving on the things we are working on."
Alfred University will next host Ithaca College in a non-conference matchup on Wednesday at 6:00 PM.
